Appellation: Walla Walla Valley

Two years ago, Richland winemaker Kyle Welch's 2014 Ginger Man Syrah warranted Wine of the Week attention. This latest example of Syrah, named for his red-bearded brother, proves that Welch is a rising star in the Washington wine industry. It strikes the right balance with Syrah (94%) showing off blueberries, leather and cherry tobacco, while influence of Grenache (6%) helps feature the silky tannins and strawberry notes, all while showing a deft touch with barrel. Prior to its commercial release last month, the 2016 Ginger Man Syrah earned a gold medal at two of the Pacific Northwest's largest judgings, the Cascadia International Wine Competition in Richland, Wash., and the Northwest Wine Summit in Hood River, Ore. Fortunately, Welch and his wife/GM Cassie have nearly tripled their production of Ginger Man Syrah since the 2014 vintage.

Production: 300 cases

Food pairings: Enjoy it braised lamb, beef stew or sweetbreads.
